The Triangle Fire Essay -- History, Industrial Work, Immigration
In an era of a rising unionization, The Triangle Fire, calligraphy written my Leon Stein, describes one of the worst industrial disasters in the nations chronicle that ended up killing 146 of the 500 Triangle shirtwaister Company employees, which happened to be female immigrant workers. These immigrants came to the United States with their families in search for a better life. sooner they found themselves working long hours only to receive low wages along with horrendous working circumstances with very little freedom. This thrilling character happened in New York on the late afternoon of March 25, 1911. The tendentious Max Blank and Isaac Harris owned the top three floors in the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in the Asch Building. Most of the workers were Italian and European Jewish woman immigrants. It was near closing time for the young workers until that calm afternoon quickly false into a frightening moment for everyone. At this moment peoples lives were flipped upside down for ever when the fire broke out on the 8th floor in the Asch Building. To this day, there is no set cause as to why the fire started. All they have is that people heard an explosion that came from the ordinal floor followed by bundles of array falling from the sky. The people soon noticed that not only were there bundle of clothes falling further those bundles of clothes were actually some of the young workers jumping and falling from the window seals. The outburst of the fire was horrible, woman were falling through the ceiling while other fetching their lives by jumping out the windows. Female workers found themselves in trouble when they tried to open the ninth floor doors to the Washington Place stairs but the doors appeared to be locked. On the other ... ...event the immigrant workers from taking breaks. They also had younger workers at the age of 14/15 by having child labor matching up to the child labor back in the Gilded Age. The Asch building also relates to hundreds of other industrial areas that were treated cruelly and unfairly. Many strikes also happened throughout the high-flown age just as the Ladies Waist and Dress Makers Union, Local No. 25 of the ILGWU did. An example from the gilded age would be the first labor strike, the hale strike of 1877, where they refused to work due to cut wages. Hundreds of people died in the railroad strike. Another example is the Haymarket riot, where they demanded an eight-hour workday where this too had hundreds of people die. In peroration, the 19th and twentieth century industrial labor was a crucial time in history. Many strikes, deaths, and under paid immigrants occurred.

Berlin Diaries Vs.Survival In Auschwitz :: essays research papers
Berlin Diaries vs. choice in AuschwitzThe two books Berlin Diaries by Marie Vassiltchikov and Survival in Auschwitz by best Levi both chronicle World War II from two assorted perspectives. They are both personal accounts from each rootages actual experiences. The two books have antithetical formats, points, facts, and actualities. For example, Berlin Diaries is in actual daybook format, and Survival in Auschwitz is in story format. I found that Berlin Diaries was harder to adopt because of the format, where Survival in Auschwitz was easier to follow. Also both stories were taken from two very different points of view. Marie Vassiltchikov was a Russian aristocrat that fled Russia and was seeking refuge in Ger some. primo Levi was an Italian Jew who was captured by the Nazis and taken to a concentration camp. Vassiltchikov was free, she lived a restricted life, exclusively she still had her independence. Levi was a prisoner he lived a captive break ones back life and had no liberties or freedoms. This difference seems to be the most consequential. They led such different lives. Levi was the absolute bane of the Nazi existence, as they were to him. In contrast, Vassiltchikov very worked for the Nazis granted to have the freedom that she did, thats where she had to work. But still, Vassiltchikov had freedom, how much more different could one get from universe a Jewish prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, as Levi was. There are so many points to this major contrast that it almost encompasses the entire concept of comparing and separate he two. While there could not be anything more opposite than having freedom and being a prisoner, there were still other differences that had no check to Vassiltchikov and Levis actual living conditions. missy (Vassiltchikov) originally was fleeing the Russian army. They would have killed her for being an aristocrat. Primos danger was always from the Nazis. His Jewish race was his hold of death. As mentioned above, Missy was a Russian aristocrat Primo was from the working differentiate of Italy. Generally their demographic backgrounds could not get much different either. pietism was also a major and blinding difference. Also as mentioned above Primo was a Jew and Missy was Christian. Nonverbal Communication and Cultural Differences Essay -- Cultural Dif
Nonverbal talk has always played an important power in the entire communication process. It may include gestures, kinesics, haptics and other means, which a person incorporates into the communication process. These acts make the communication process more effective and meaningful. However, nonverbal communication is highly influenced by cultural differences as the background of the culture defines how the message is interpreted. This essay will analyse several types of nonverbal communication such as proxemics, haptics, kinesics, semiotics and paralinguistic. It will also analyse the messages conveyed by these nonverbal communication types in different cultures and their impact on the non-verbal communication process in coition cultural contexts. Culture has always been a driving force in understanding nonverbal communication as nonverbal communication is highly influenced by the cultural differences as the context of the culture defines how the communication/message is interpr eted in certain cultures. Communication occurs within a context but the context is particularly important in relation to non-verbal communication (Tyler, Kossen & Ryan, 2005, p.185). Culture defines the messages perceived by the non-verbal communication. For instance, proxemics. Proxemics refers to the spatial relationship or how we habit space. (Tyler, Kossen & Ryan, 2005, p.190) Culture plays an important role in defining the use of ones personal space in the nonverbal communication process. For example, in North America people unremarkably remain at a distance from one another when talking while Latin American people stay very close when talking. (Wood, 2009). This defines the use of the privacy or personal space in two different cultures. H... ... Body Politics, power, sex, and nonverbal communication, Prentice Hall, New Jersey.Julia T. Wood. (2009). catcher in the rye :: essays research papers
In J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye, a young man named Holden Caulfield goes through many misadventures during a three day wedge in New York. Holden acts like a careless teenager but the reader gets the feeling that he cared once and wishes that he could again. He has what is almost an fixation with death and is constantly dwelling on the death of his brother Allie, who died of leukemia. He carries Allies baseball mitt with him wherever he goes. He was obviously rattling disturbed by Allies death as he broke all the windows in his garage with his bare fist with such force that his leave is still messed up. His feelings toward people and relationships tend to lean toward the negative side. He usually expects the worst, part of that seems to be issues he has from the loss of his brother Allie. One of the words he uses often throughout the novel is phony. He values honesty and sincerity, and cant stand people who try to make themselves look better in the eyes of others. He flu nks out of every school that his parents send him to including Pency, his current school. He seems to be fairly intelligent and the reader gets a sense that his problems in school are the result of lack of motivation. He isolates himself from those around him and seems to be afraid of change always assuming it will be for the worst. He seems to gain a great deal of love and respect for his sister Phoebe and his dead brother Allie. Holden is a very complex character and is difficult to understand. The paper begins on top of a hill overlooking the football stadium at Pency. Holden stands alone on top of the hill watching the game because he didnt want to go down into the stadium with everybody else. This is a good beginning as it shows Holdens tendency to isolate himself from others and his popular dislike of people. He has flunked out of Pency, and is not supposed to return after Christmas vacation. Christmas vacation starts in three days but Holden gets fed up with his classmates and school in general and leaves to go to New York and get a hotel room. He doesnt go home because he wants his parents to get the letter informing them of his expulsion before he comes home.

In addition to the cost of purchase TV spots, you may need to pay for the development of your commercials. Harder to Target AudiencePrint and broadcast outlets provide media kits with audience demographics, but once a ma gazine is mailed, a paper is depicted or an ad is broadcast, you dont know who actually read, saw or viewed your ad. Less InformationThe message you can deliver with traditional advertising is much more limited compared to newer forms of communications. If you can get people to your website with the click of a banner ad or link, you have most unlimited opportunities to deliver page after page of information to customers. With print and broadcast, you must communicate your message within a few square inches of space or in 30 seconds. d) Disadvantages of Digital MarketingLacking an actual presence The customer struggles to actually feel or decide to try on the merchandise which may be a restriction for several products. Nevertheless a study of customers of cosmetics services and products suggests that e-mail marketing may be used to interest a customer to searchwell for a shop to get one of these solutions or even to consult with sales representatives. Hard to put if individuals ar e lying Theres too much informative data on the World Wide Web today, its often difficult to differentiate between quality and garbage. Lots of the garbage is directed at newcomers. Lots of Information Once more we reach the section of their being really a large amount of info on the World Wide Web. It might be too much good data as well. There is a lot of competition for a business, this can make a person more troubled than if there have been given lots of garbage. You will possibly not have the ability to tell whom to choose.CONCLUSIONTraditional marketing and digital marketing are two different ways of advertisement that have been applied for marketers since the old ages till the current time. Considering the points we have covered above, we come to conclude that each type of marketing is effective depending of the person we are advertising it to.REFFERENCES1. http//www.businesszone.co.uk/blogs/robbo75/totally-digital-marketing/10-benefits-digital-marketing-v-traditional-marketin g2. http//digital-marketing-strategy.weebly.com/digital-marketing-vs-traditional-marketing.html3. http//smallbusiness.chron.com/advantages-disadvantages-traditional-marketing-25573.html Valencia Higuera, n.d

From Failure to success Essay
Robert Kennedys statement that Only those who dare to fail greatly force out ever achieve greatly has been painfully evident in my life. Until recently, I had neer dared to fail greatly at anything, and as a result, I never achieved greatly at anything either. Luckily, I have learned the importance of attempting something when theres a looming possibility of failure. At Boys body politic this summer, I spent a week living with 300 other young men while learning about how North Carolinas government works. To give us a firm grasp of the governmental process, each floor elected town officials, each dorm elected county officials, and the three dorms together elected the state officials. The Boys State program also had its own moot court program from which despotic Court Justices were elected. At Boys State, I ran for positions in the town and county government, and for Supreme Court Justice. Of the septette positions I competed for, I only won two elections. I count this as a failure because the only positions I won were positions that had no candidates to even out me. The loss that affected me the most was Supreme Court Justice. This was the position I had wanted to win even before I arrived at Boys State, and I gave up all of my afternoon activity time so that I could participate in the moot court program and remain an eligible candidate for Supreme Court Justice. Unfortunately, the elections for justices were the last of all the voting, and by midnight, everybody wanted to get jeopardize to their dorms so the time for our speeches was cut from one minute to ten seconds. Needless to say, I was so unprepared for the sudden change of events, that I barely had time to say my name and one reason I was running before I ran out of time.I lost the election, but the loss taught me that I needed to become more visible so that I would not have to think on a speech for people to realize that I was a person they should vote for. However, if I had the chance to go back and change anything I had done there, I probably wouldnt change a thing. The reasons for this are not as difficult to understand as they probably should be. Firstly, if I went back and changed anything I had done then, I would not have learned that lesson, and would now be lacking a very important experience in my life. Secondly, faithful things also came from my loss of the election for Supreme Court Justice. In my failure, I brought theattention of the gubernatorial candidate onto me. The next morning, he asked me if I would like to be his Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety which is one of the highest positions at Boys State. After a moment of shock, I immediately accepted the position. Thus, as a result of my own great failure, I achieved greatly.

John Taylor Gatto Against School Essay
When it comes to the traditional education, John Taylor Gattos Against School questions whether we really need the nine month, drawn out, traditional curriculum. Gatto goes on to name several prosperous people through history that were non products of a contemporary school system. When I think of Gattos theory of forced schooling, a fri hold on of tap named John Smith who goes by the alias of Viper comes to mind. Viper is in his late 20s, lives in South Philadelphia, and has worked as a Roofer for the past 10 historic period. Viper went to a mankind school in South Philadelphia. Viper went to a school where said, It wasnt easy. I was scrawny and white and we were poorer than the jigs that went to school wit us, so we caught alota shit. Vipers school was passing underfunded. Some days there would be trash laid out by the trash cans cause nobody would change the trash bags, the food was shit, and the bathrooms parry it. He would walk twelve blocks back to his house just to go to the bathroom. There were no extracurricular activities like book clubs and band and the school was rundown and decrepit.Eventually he started to miss classes regularly. He felt that the teachers did not care. Classes were passing boring to him. He was actually approached by his biology teacher and told he could splay class everyday as long as he turned in his work and he would receive a D at the end of the year. He was not amused by the offer, he was not even inte quelled in graduating anymore. I expected to be a laborer for the rest of my life so I felt like education was unimportant. Vipers education started taking a back seat to work around his sophomore year of high school. He was the middle child in a family of four, all of whom have dropped out of high school and are laborers today. My parents made me turn back a job when I was thirteen, thats the way it was with all my brothers, says Viper. Eventually he started to make a decent amount of money and admits to being extre mely nave, saying Why the fuck was I gonna go ta school for eight more years if I was makin 25-30 thousand dollars a year.Do the math, instead of spendin 100 thousand dollars in college and waste my time in school I coulda made 200 thousand dollars by the time I was 24. One day Viper decided to make an appointment with a school counselor. He was hardly going to class, works every day when he was sibyllic to be in school, and partying every night and having fun. School was more of a social event. He was just going to school to see his friends and make plans for the weekend. When he told the school counselor that he was planning on dropping out the counselor stood up, looked him in the eye, extended his hand and said, Good Luck The guy didnt even give a shit Viper said.By the time December came around of his sophomore year, he was a high school dropout. He was working everyday by that time already so he was not stagnant. He was still living with his parents. The fact that he dropped out was ok with them because he could contribute to the house, as his father put it. Viper eventually saved enough money to get his own place and now lives with his wife of three years and their two children who are two and five years of age. He said, I always thought I learned more out of school than in high school, but its not what my kids are gonna do. He aspires to open his own roofing company one day. Although I do not agree with the path that Viper chose in life, he is happy and successful today. He is a great father and happily married. Catcher In The Rye Essay
A journey is more than than a physical movement from whizz place to another. All journeys no matter how arduous entail setbacks and barriers that must be met. In doing so the traveller experiences a more significant inner journey of self growth. This is evident in the journey from adolescence to maturehood during which setbacks and barriers whitethorn entail a loss of purity. J. D Salingers novel the Catcher in the rye whiskey explores this concept through various literary techniques. ( thesis) Loss of innocence as a major issue within the concept of a rites of passage is explored by J. D Salinger through the protagonist Holden Caulfield. His journey appears to be one self destructive act after another. This adult world into which Holden is forced into disturbs him profoundly. In his view, the adults who dwell this world, seem to be filled with phoniness, pretence and social compromise. He finds it almost intolerable to communicate with most adults and peers. This is prevalent th roughout the book when he constantly brings up the promontory of what happens to the ducks in winter. The adults response to this recurring question is of contemn and expectation to know the answer, therefore never giving him an adequate explanation. This clearly demonstrates how his innocent mind conflicts with this phony adult world, and his response, is to rebel against this whole society. reference Holden expresses his rebellion through his inability to progress in life and his hatred of people. It is really only in children that he sees the true simplicity of honesty- and that is his escape from this adult phony world. Salinger portrays the transition from adolescence to adulthood as a quest for self identity and self discovery. For Holden however, his journey is a bombardment of obstacles in his attempt for connective with others, thus highlighting the angst of growing up.Holden finally breaks down with the constant disappointments and let downs he encounters. retell ans technique From his fight with Stradlater to Maurices exploitation of a prostitute, to Mr Antolinis behaviour, Holden just cannot handle any more letdowns so his odyssey is one of loneliness and cynicism. An example of this is when Holden abruptly gives Sally an ultimatum to leave their current lives behind and crap a future without the promise of stability. Sallys refusal to this proposal results in Holden lashing out at her hence elucidating Holdens naivety. And, just like a kid, he thinks that everyone is to blame except for him.The inability to meet setbacks and barriers and accept a loss of innocence within the jouney from adolescence to adulthood will inevitably lead to ones downfall. The thrifty irony is that Holden strives to act as a grown up tho constantly acts like a child is seen in his provocation of his peers and his irrational thinking. quote The title of the book, Catcher in the Rye, is more than just a pretty ditty. It is Holdens dream to be the catcher in the ry e, thus save diminutive children from falling off the cliff into adulthood. Any government agency, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all.Thousands of little kids, and nobodys aroundnobody big, I meanexcept me. And Im standing on the edge of some gruesome cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliffI mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going. I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really like to be. Holden is adamant on playing the adult role of protect children and their innocence that gets lost in the adult phony world. He envisions protecting and shielding children from the evils of society, when he himself is one who is in a state of conflict between adolescence and adulthood. However, it is through the telling of his story that Holden eventual ly gains control of his disturbed past. His search for self identity and discovery can be seen as a search for tolerance, acceptance and understanding- something that he finally experiences in the final scene with quintet riding the carrousel. When he sees Phoebe on the carrousel, he accepts that he is not a child anymore indicating that he is perhaps more accepting of change.Towards the end, Holden has found some wisdom when he claims to sort of miss everyone. There was some light for him at the end of the tunnel- and that light is hope and acceptance that he doesnt live in such an evil world that he made out to be. Holden wants desperately to protect this idealistic life but perhaps he realises at the end that it is not possible and that maturity is a means of accepting what life throws at one. How he deals with obstacles along the way conveys Holdens journey from adolescence into adulthood.

Cultural History of Rap Essay
Public Enemy opens the track with Cant Truss It in a knock merge with Flavor Flav who sh come to the fores Confusion their voices paralleled over the heavy and energetic baselines. Even though the song speaks about slavery as belted ammunitionped by spit D about the legacy of slavery, the opening rhymes could as thoroughly be used to describe the heathenish storey of bang music (Rose 272).While on that point is coarsespread perception that knocking culture is nonhing barely a noisy and confusing genre of music that has crept into contemporary Americas culture, in that location are those who posit that belt is an educational tool, as a component of the rose hip hop culture it is a direction of life, a representation of mixer activism and a music genre with recondite well-disposed undertones that are drawn from its identifiable origins.Any discussion on the esthetical edge of knock cannot be made unless a vituperative analysis is done of the sequential teaching s in tapdance music. Never even in its tutelage did lash gain the latria of the larger populace. The obstacles it faced as it grew from its roots to achieve its present status are so many that it would be a great disservice to become a criticism angle on the concept of aesthetic edge to disregard rap and pronounce it dead.Initially rap music was regarded as a passing fad that was nothing but a playful and ephemeral expression of mordant culture whose origins could be traced to the musical theater energies of the black urban teens. Wynston Marshalis disregard hip hop as nothing but adolescent ghetto minstresly (Dyon xv). When it was realized that rap as a form of music was meant to stay longer than it had been expected, it received a novel christening that permanently fixed it as a form of music played by and for black ghetto youths. It is at this point that reactions against rap became transformed from dismissal to denigration and it was commonplace to hear attacks from both the white and black quarters. Trying to chart the origins or rap music as a form of pagan expression is very tricky because we are either forced to accept that the cultural foundation existed but tho gained expression finished rap or view rap as an independent cultural facet that spontaneously erupted without deep cultural roots from where it had existed way before it gained wide applause or derision. However, for the sake of charting the cultural history of rap and pinning it to what critics say about the music genre, it can be conclusively said that the start-off instance of rap could be traced to the revolutionary verse that was done by Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets. Pigmeat Markham followed next with Here Come de Judge, to Bessie Smith rapping along to the beats in her blues (Keyes 17 Forman & Neal 61). For the purposes of moleculeing the origins of rap, it is also prudent to cite that Rap existed in some ancient African oral traditions and consequently in contemporary African American cultural practices.Specifically, innovative cultural history of rap begins in 1979, with Sugarhill Gang rapping in the song Rappers Delight. These early cases were mostly underground rap forms. Underground rap was viewed as the signal breaker and what followed next was the birth of hip hop and the beginning of the global popularity of rap music. unremarkably the first stage in production of rap music was the record production where the artist would place their rhythmic repetitive speech over cognise black music hits which were mostly R&B rhythms that were well known. This stage would later on transform with the help of advanced technical virtuosity through stick machines, instrumentation and the sampling of existing records so as to make rap a form of music that was creatively symbolic(Forman & Neal 61 Keyes 122). Despite all these changes rap was still limited to the home(a) city neighborhoods, curiously in at its cradle the New York City. Artists give care Cold Rush Br separates, Africa Bambataa, Kurtis Blow, Busty Bee, Kool Moe Dee, Funky 4 plus 1, Grandmaster Mel and DJ Kool Herc, began actively experimenting with this new music genre as well as proclaiming its African roots (Keyes 17).Its development was thus marked by the description and analysis of the brotherly, political and economic concomitantors that stimulated its emergence and consequent developments. Such factors included police brutality, drug addiction, teen pregnancy coupled to a variety of cases of material deprivation. A renowned case is Kurtis Blows lyrics in Those are the Breaks, and the Message a song merges between The Furious quintette and Grandmaster Flash. These songs pictured the hues existent in the accessible misery as well as the stains that could be observed as profoundly reminiscent of urban catastrophe. A rendition of the Message was as followsYoull grow up in the ghetto living second rate/ And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate/ The places y ou play and where you stay, / Looks want one great alleyway/ Youll admire all the number book takers/ Thus, pimps, and pushers and the big money makers/ Drivin big cars, spending like a jungle sometimes/ It makes me wonder how I keep from goin under. (Forman & Neal 62) This song together with Flashs New York, New York became the pioneers of the social awakening that characterizes rap music in combination with musical creation, social protest and cultural expression (Forman & Neal 62).Kool Herc who was a Jamaican DJ in the Bronx is credited with revolutionizing the rhythms in rap. Herc had a unique style of deejaying where rhymes could be recited over instrumentals. In places where he was deejaying such as house parties, he would rap on the microphone while involving a variety of the in-house references. These duplicates of house parties where Herc was deejaying quickly diffused to Manhattan and Brooklyn and followers of rap music began to grow in number (Keyes 40 Adaso 1). Next st age of outgrowth was the emergence in financial fortunes from rappers. However, at the background there were still beliefs that rap was nothing but an epiphenomenol cultural activity that would with time wane off by and by the youth became bored or acquired a different diversion in life just like what had happened to graffiti art and break dancing. But the growth of groups such as the Run-DMC rap group entrenched rap as an independent sphere of an expression of art that increasingly took control of its destiny. Run-DMC became the progenitor of the modern form of rap that is basically a creative integration of diverse musical elements, social commentary and uncompromising cultural identification. This significant integration pushed rap into the mainstream of American culture as well as securing its future as a music genre that has a clearly identifiable tradition. The commercial and critical success that Run-DMC accomplished almost single handedly, pushed rap music into American ho mes by being certified gold, being featured on MTV as well as being the first rap album(Raising Hell in 1987) to go triple platinum(Keyes 67). Moreover, with the song Proud to be Black they intoned unabashed racial pride that was missing in those eld of chronic racial discrimination. It can also be said that it was at this time in the cultural history that Run-DMC acting like a self proclaimed ambassador of rap music began to concentrate its symptomatic subversive cultural didacticism to address issues of racism, classism, urban pain, and social neglect. In rap concerts, rappers followd in ritualistic refusals to abide by the censoring of speech. The concert also acted as space for cultural resistance, loosening the strictures that Blacks were subjected to through demoralizing condemnation and tyrannizing surveillance. The latter actions by the hegemonies white ruling class only served to muffle cultural creativity and self expression. Based on these developments rap music became a strong social force fighting for their civil rights and liberties. Commercial success was instrumental in pushing rap music to the mainstream American culture on one hand but on the other, other charge was levied on rap music that rap expressed and promoted violence. A notable personality, Tipper Gore has often retained his repeated stance that rap music only appeals to those kids who are angry, disillusioned and unloved. He posits that rap tells them that it is okay to engage in violence. To this day there is a popular perception that there exists an intimate linkage between rap music and the violence exhibited in the social arena especially by Latino and black inner city youth. However, much people may try to substantiate these claims, they are merely billet shows and give birth nothing to do with the deep understanding of rap as a genre of music as well as a cultural and historical identity of the American people. There are countless numbers of rappers who have spoken against violence. On point is rapper KRS-One on his track titled, disclose the Violence in the top selling album of 1989, Self Destruction. In the track KRS-One raps that violence predates rap and is therefore not a characteristic of rap music. He urges a stop of black on black violence as it only erodes the social and communal fabric that had for decades debased inner cities where blacks resided across America (Forman & Neal 66). Despite the potency of the message that KRS-One put across, categorically negative images in against rap have persisted. In a nutshell, rap music is emblematic of the existence of glacial shifts in aesthetic sensibilities that have for decades progressed as blacks moved from one extension to the next with regard to the severity of economic barriers that have been at play in the movement from the ghetto life to middle or upper middle class blacks. Fortunately, these negative perceptions of rap have led to the development of a fierce competitive steak among rappers and hence their unrelenting transcendence across boundaries to global markets. It is upon this developments that rap modeled the modern definition of hip hop which opines that it is a form of music comprised of emceeing and deejaying coupled with graffiti and break dancing. These are the four components of hip hop that catapulted it to its current big business nature. As this evolution progresses other components like clothing trend, life style, slang and the general mindset are becoming more and more incorporated into the hip hop culture. In differentiating rap and hip hop it can be said that rap is a genre of music in the hip hop culture.articulatio coxae hop is a lifestyle complete with its own dress codes and lingo. To borrow the words of KRS-One, hip hop defines how you life while rap is definitive of what you (Adaso 1 Cheryl Keyes interview with KRS-One). Therefore, as a product of decades cross cultural integration with deep roots in the African culture, African oral traditi on and consequently African American tradition, it is late weaved into the social fabric that pronouncing it dead based on the basis of aesthetic edge is simply parochial.First, it is prudent to understand the cultural developments of rap music because it is only in such an understanding that it becomes considerably plausible to attribute lack of aestheticity in its present forms. In context, rap music brings together so many complex social, economic, cultural and political issues. Its contradictory articulations are neither signs of losing the aesthetic edge nor signs of the absence of intellectual clarity. As stated in the beginning of this discourse, the obstacles that rap has survived to become what it is today are may and variable. Therefore, the contradictory articulations that are existent today are but common features of cultural dialogues that not unidirectional but multi directional in that they include the social, cultural and political contexts that define the everyday s truggles over pleasure, resources and meanings in the environment where we live and interact(Rose 274). Rap music is a cultural expression that is a preserve of the black community since it prioritizes black voices living in the inner cities of urban America. It is highly rhythmic with a very strong storytelling component. The music is basically electronically based. These are some of the characteristic features of rap music. It is upon these tenets that rap music should be judged so as to form an opinion on its relevance. Rapping which is currently embedded on the powerful technological, industrial as well as ideological institutions usually involve the telling of long and sometimes filch stories that are necessary in passing the information to the wider audience. Memorable phrases and rhymes that are themselves black sound bite packaged in an ever changing black slang. In essence, rap music wizards, all sounds, images, icons and ideas for recontextualization, mockery, pun and celeb ration. All these characteristics lie at the core of rap and are therefore definitive of it. In his book, Hip Hop Matters, Watkins, quotes David Samuels who asserts that rap has forfeited whatever claim it may have has to particularly by acquiring a mainstream white audience whose taste increasingly determined the nature of the form. What whites wanted was not music, but black music, which as a result stopped really being either (85).This statement confirms that rap has lost its aesthetic edge because owing to its origins that clearly defined the cultural difference between white and black music, such a divide was rugged by rappers like Eminem who symbolized the first breakage of that division. The fact that Eminem rose to a celebrity status despite his white background also confirms that from the earlier days when rap was a preserve for only the black kids, rap has revolutionized and rewritten the racial and cultural history of America. This assertion can be counterbalanced by the fact that the existence and the inevitability of social change cannot be used as a reason to proclaim that rap has completely lost its aesthetic edge. Moreover, the American landscape has changed both socially, economically, politically and culturally. Days when white hegemonies and racial discrimination have gone by. There cannot be a greater explanation for the political changes than the mere fact that a Black president is occupying the white house. In introducing the book, Know What I Mean, by Dyson rapper JZ reiterates the socio-economic underpinnings that defined his life as he grew on the tough streets of Detroit. These conditions of life opened up his mind to the benefits of learning. He could have become a teacher at Baltimore to show the young kids the benefits of leaning just like Tupac had been shown that there existed a power in knowledge and understanding a peoples history (Dyson ix). He further points out that hip hop are not only Black American but American as well.It is correct in the context of cultural discourses to pinpoint forms of music that are termed as rap and are indeed not. Nas assertion that hip hop is dead is welcome as it denotes artistic vigilance. Moreover, Nas forms the caliber of rappers who have maintained the original style and content of rap music. As a rapper he has come into contact with a variety of musicians who are not driven by the basic nature of the rapper to use music as a form of activism against social ills.In his book, Dyson describes Nas as one of his generation who is not illiterate, destructive or materialistic, a man who read for passion, pleasure and intellectual stimulation (iv). At the core, rap music can never be called rap without an examination and acceptance of its true nature in the social fabric of Americas landscape. According to Nas, hip hop is dead is a title he used for his album because he felt that unlike in the historical late(prenominal), people no longer have political voices. utterance in an interview with MTV, he said, When I say hip-hop is dead, basically America is dead. There is no political voice. Music is dead Our way of thinking is dead, our commerce is dead. Everything in this society has been done. Its like a slingshot, where you throw the m- back and it starts losing speed and is about to fall down. Thats where we are as a country what I mean by hip-hop is dead is were at a vulnerable state. If we dont change, we gonna disappear like Rome. I think hip-hop could help rebuild America, once hip-hoppers own hip-hop We are our own politicians, our own government, we have something to say (MTV. com) In another interview Nas said that he used the title as a way of engendering reaction from other artists which like he expected happened.Nas blamed the hip hop world especially those in the South for reducing the quality of rap with sub genres like snap music and crunk. Such productions were ideally an vilification to Nas street credibility. It is aspect of street credibility that Keyes refers to as street consciousness. A critical analysis of the lyrical content as well as the social message in many of todays rap hits confirms Nas assertion that hip hop is dead. The noble quest for social voice that had existed in the past has been replaced with a music genre that is solely driven towards material possession and the pleasures that accompany such acquisitions of wealth. In another interview he could not be more exact, he said that rappers were simply monkeying around and just scrambling for attention. As a counter attack to the notion that hip hop has lost its aesthetic edge, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Lil Wayne and Kanye West scoffed at the assertions made by Nas. Specifically, Ludacris intoned that hip hop aint dead that it was indeed living in the South. byword that it was the South keeping it alive, he added that hip hop is what you make it to be.Moreover, they believed that due to the booming South, saying that hip hop is dead does not make scent out as the south would have been dead too(http//tbohiphop. net). According to Keyes, Rap music if a forum used by rappers to address economic and political disfranchisement of youths especially black youths, it fosters ethnic pride, displays cultural values and aesthetics. At the core rap is artists, the themes they portray and the variation of styles in the portrayal of these themes as a sure materialisation of urban life and street consciousness values and aesthetics. Therefore as countries, cultures and cultural components change and socially restructure, there is going to be a continual transformation across cultures and not even rap music can escape such an onslaught. However, a dominant cultural force like rap genre can never be erased. There are core components that will forever define and differentiate rap music from other musical genres. Works Cited Dyson, E. All Saints – Retail Environment
My Favourite Retail Environment All Saints Before you enter the shop, All Saints acquit set their tone. Headless mannequins hang on chains, enclosed by dark grey walls the window appearance at the front of the shop is bleak yet the simple nature portrays the beauty of the garments. The surrounding windows be tinted, therefore you can see out but not in this gives the shop an exclusive ascertaining, impart to the individual style of the clothes and the high price tags. The building is the main feature of All Saints which sets it aside from other high street shops its a converted bank, however its been renovated to look and feel like a church, this view is gained from entry as you step through the spacious wooden doors. The ceilings be high, the arches, pillars and cornices ar incredible, the tiled floor is amazing, and the centre of the store has a beautiful round ceiling wall painting with a balcony surrounding and a trio of gold, goblet type ornaments. The shop is very gothi c in style and having every wall painted a dark grey colour contributes the styling of the clothes and the wittiness the shop puts you in its like a fantasy world where the Victorian era meets moderne Soho or downtown New York. Lighting in the store consists of spotlights on the ceiling pointing down at for each one fixture or display of clothing this provides great contrast to the blandness of the colours and excessively highlights the garments beauty. The spotlights also contribute to the exclusive, almost celebrity feeling as they transform the store into a loving of set, depicting a story, as would be done in a movie. There is a suspension cruciform, created from very bright, stark naked bulbs. This creates a very artistic and creative view and a shiver n roll feel within the store, allowing the consumer to really understand the innovative and conceptual brand they are purchasing from. The theme of crosses is continued throughout the store and also features on the giant iro n lead outside the store. The fixtures on the wall are created to be in the shape of a cross and the ends of each arm have a small cross logo. The fixtures are like scaffolding and the display cabinets are giant old wooden tables or big heavy draws and cupboards with huge locks and chains. The displays are incredible with huge butcher style hooks, warehouse style chains and metal, old head neck dummies ripping at the seams and skull candles. The store has depressive modern music playing in a relaxed manner, contributing to the contemporary feel and devising the shopping experience more pleasant. There is no perfumed smell to the store yet it has a kind of musk which smells like old vs new. All Saints staff is incredibly attentive and great at marketing in a non-pushy manner. Overall the store is very open plan the distressed feel and bewitch meets grunge cool is inspiring and that is what makes All Saints my favourite retail environment.

Every morning at five, Pierre arrived at the milk companys persistents to find his wagon already filled with bottles of milk and Joseph waiting for him, Pierre would call, Bonjour, my old booster, as he climb ed into his seat, while Joseph turned his transfer toward the driver. The other drivers would pull a face. They said that the horse smiled at Pierre. Then Pierre would softly call to Joseph, Vance, moon aim. And the two would go proudly down the street. Without any order from Pierre, the wagon would roll down three streets. Then it turned right for two streets, originally turning left to Saint Catherine Street. The horse finally stop at the first house on Prince Edward Street. on that point, Joseph would wait perhaps thirty seconds for Pierre to get down off his seat and put a bottle of milk at the front door. Then the horse walked past the next two houses and stopped at the third. And without being told, Joseph would turn around and come back off along the other side. Ah yes, Joseph was a hopeful horse. Pierre would talk about Joseph. L never touch the reins. He knows Just where to stop. Why, a sieve man could deliver my milk with Joseph pulling the wagon. This part is narra tive sequence. A lot of Junctions come to support the cohesion and coherence a lot of attention is vocalizes on time markers after about a year, every morning at five, adverb already, while, then, before as the events have duration and the character life follows its data track addition and, summary finally, place there. When he arrived at the stable he always r emembered to tell Jacques, The Pausing took an extra bottle this morning the Limousines bought a pint of cream some of the drivers had to make out the weekly bills and collect the money, but Jacques, liking Pierre, never asked him to do this. All Pierre had to do was arrive at five in the morning, walk to his wagon, which always was in the same place, and deliver his milk. He returned about two hours later, got down from his seat, called a cheery Au over to Jacques, then walked slowly down the street. This part contains narrative sequence and ideological sequence. We are two old men, he said to Jacques. Let us wear out together. When Joseph is ready to leave, then I too will do so. There was something about Pierre and his horse that made a man smile tenderly. Each seemed to get some hidden strength from the other. It was quiet down dark. The air was like ice. Snow had fallen during the night. Jacques said, Pierre, your horse, Joseph, didnt wake up. He was very old, Pierre. He was twenty-five and that is like being lxxv for a man. Yes, Pierre said slowly. Yes. I am 75. And I cannot see Joseph again. Oh, of course you can, Jacques said softly. Well find another horse Just as good as Joseph. Why, in a month youll teach him to know all the homes as well as Joseph did. Well. The look in Pierces eyes stopped him. He saw a dead, Lifeless Look in them. drive the day off, Pierre, Jacques said But Pierre was gone limping down the street. Pierre walked to the comer and stepped into the street. This part is the biggest and it contains different narrative modes narration is combined with ideological sequence and with explanatory elements in the end.Vocabulary is made up of lexemes regarding nature reality (morning, dark, air, ice, snow, night, cold wind), human reality (wake up, see, looking, teach, heard, said, alkyd, were blind), traffic (street, warning shout, driver, truck, screech of rubber tires). Following the chronological order time markers are very important Then one cold morning, For years, Now, Five minutes later and a significant part plays the junction Of course as it emphasizes the moments of emotional intensity, and But -? it rises the thrill. A description opens the block Th en one cold morning Jacques had terrible news for Pierre. It was still dark. The air was like ice. Snow had fallen during the night. -? it creates a specific mood, something dismal will happen.Three explanatory sequences help to complete the outcome Drivers explanation l couldnt help it, the truck driver said, He walked in front of my truck. He he never saw it, I guess. Why, he walked as though he were blind. he tries to convince the others that it is not his fault, partly he still is in shock 0 Doctors explanation Blind? Of course the man was blind. See those growths? This man has been blind for five years. He turned to Jacques, You say he worked for you? Only one Only one knewa friend of his, named Joseph It was T was a secret, I think, Just between those two. -? he also feels terri fied, and at fault Stylistic devices help to enrich artistic language and complete what is unsaid by the narrator parable The air was like ice -? it was very cold He was twenty-five and that is like being seventy-five for a man. -? they both are very old Well find another horse Just as good as Joseph -? a horse that is as gentle as Joseph he walked as though he were blind -? he didnt see nothing Epithet terrible news -? very bad news heavy cap -? a cap that only seemed naively, Germination Peeler Peeler near nothing, He en never saw, Only one Only one knew, It was T was a secret -? its a kind of shock that terrifies the speakers, they are unable to express their thoughts As it is noticed the narration follows the chronological order because the events presented begin with the moment when Pierre receives the Job and finishes with his death. Also this fact is supported by time markers as after about a year, every ironing at five, then, one day, for thirty years, being seventy-f ive for a man. The straight line narrative is respected and the facilitation is quick-frozen. The narrator adopts the Ill-person point of view because he wants to give more credibility to the story being told. Thats why the text includes more narrative sequences, the majority of verbs are in Past Simple (knew, pulled, said, turned, stopped, sang ), the use of pronoun he and unctuousness Pierre, Joseph, Jacques, cooks, driversThe narrative prospect is neuter because the narrator use camera recording in presenting the vents everything is seen like in a movie, first it is described the place (Montreal) then the main characters are introduced (Pierre, Joseph) after that the narrator registers the main relations fixed with other characters Jacques, drivers, cooks, president), their interactions. After G. Genet the narrator point of view is external what is recorded represents the surface level (For the past fifteen years, a large white horse pulled his milk wagon. In Montreal, especia lly in the French part of the city, animals and children are often given the names of saints. ) after TX. Outdoor the narrator knows less than his character N

How does Seamus Heaney reveal his culture in ââ¬ËDiggingââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËFollowerââ¬â¢? Essay
Seamus Heaney was born in Northern Ireland in 1939 to a take to the woodsing class family. Being the scratch of nine siblings wasnt easy provided Heaneys intelligence was highlighted when he won a cognizance to a catholic school at the tender age of twelve. He had an agricultural back estate and was raise on the family farm where he stood proud of his hard working ancestors and their adroitnesss. After studying Heaneys first pair of songs dig and Follower I quite a little especi completelyy relate to the strong family values Heaney displays, b arly an important part of the Irish tradition is for a bugger off to pass on his business or trade down to the eldest son. We incurm how Heaney would feel pressurised thence he would have a smokestack to live up to judging by that exposed in his poetry. It is well k presentlyn that most Irish manhood big businessman be working class and Ireland has a very strong pub culture from this fact stems m any(prenominal) stereotypes. through with(predicate) his poetry Heaney attempts to challenge the discrimination that is regularly shown towards Irish farmers. We detect even today many a great deal t honest-to-god jokes involve the Irish man as the fool its the Irish farmer that is especially misinterpreted, still Heaney gives us a fair insight into the life of his family and their farming profession he tells endorsers of the immense skill needed to farm well and the capability of an Irish farmer. He is therefore challenging the tradition besides damaging the stereotype.Firstly we see how Digging has two a metaphorical and material kernel to it. The literal subject matter is that his contract and grand hear ar farmers, the poem talks about his family Digging and working on the farm. Onwards from this the metaphorical meaning is that Seamus Heaney himself is Digging into his past and background, which indeed is farming. Hence the title is quite an effective. Digging is about Heaney breaking away fro m the family tradition and becoming a poet thus it is create verbally in an untraditional way.In Digging Heaney begins his poem in the present tense he is describing what he is doing and his surroundings at the time of writing before he takes a step back in time, reminiscing and evaluating his thought serve well as his memories link causing him to remember the past and the skills of his fetch and grandad. He is sat by his windowpane to write the poem and therefore fulfilling his passion as a poet he describes seeing his elderly pay back operose amongst the flowerbeds, then goes into the past and reminisces again about his bugger off and how he would farm so well. He writes of the times when he and his father would work together picking potatoes on the farm. Further on Heaney delves copiouser into his family history, he moves on from his father and begins to speak of his grandfather linking the 2 together via their epic skills. He writesBy God, the old man could handle a spa deJust standardized his old man.Heaney uses his chain of thoughts in a very regularisely way and describes the potato picking days from his past, he goes into detail about how the potatoes smell and the sound of the soggy peat. He then ends with a stanza much like his first, yet at heart this stanza we see how he realises that his tool is not that of a farmer but is a save and his skill is to write. The net line, however, is set in the future tense to emphasise Heaneys de marginination Ill dig with it.In contrast Follower is a very different poem. Here, Seamus Heaney writes about his days on the farm from the spot of being a youngish boy. He sees his father working on a horse and wrench as he recollects upon how he looked up to his father and saw him as a great role-model, indeed, as a child Heaney himself wanted to become a farmer. Thus the poem is, unlike Digging written in a traditional way. Follo move in his fathers footsteps and traipsing around the farm Heaney would reach out a abhorrence of himself. The poem is ended with a twist as Heaney states that the tables have turned as considering the present Seamus Heaney feels his father is stumbling behind him. This is reflected when he statesIt is my father who keeps stumblingBehind me and will not go away.Like the general ancestor in Digging these two lines have both a literal and metaphorical meaning, the literal is that his father is now and old man and is fleshlyly stumbling behind him and becoming a nuisance. The hidden metaphorical meaning is one that highlights the shame he feels, the way in which his father is stumbling behind him reflects how the memories of breaking the family tradition fix him still and how his father is now a essence through the regret he feels.Digging starts by setting the scene with a two line stanzaBetween my fingers breadth and my thumbThe squat draw up rests snug as a acceleratorThe poet is sitting, watching and listening whilst absorbing his surroundings. We see how he is in deep thought as the secondment line simile reveals that although the pen is sitting comfortably it is potentially enormously powerful. He refers to his pen as squat I rely this is ironic as the burden of breaking a tradition and risking further collapsing the Irish stereotype is not light at all in fact it is a heavy burden to handle.Heaney lets his pen rest as he observes his father out of the window this creates an opposing mood to the following phrase snug as a gun this very convinces the reader of its power. I believe that through this he is showing us that he feels he must detach himself as a writer from his family in order to view his relationships from a virtual(prenominal) perspective he must distance himself from the feelings he has towards his family in order to evaluate fairly and make things less personal to him and more than of an all round view upon the farming tradition. In the next stanza we are shown how Digging is an auditory poema clean ra sping soundWhen the spade sinks into gravely groundThis is what Heaney is hearing as he looks out of his window. The fact he uses sounds brings him poem to life more and makes everything more realistic. Heaney then writesMy father, digging. I look downI believe that this metaphor could symbolise the fact that Heaney is higher(prenominal) is status than his father Heaney is a middle-class poet whereas his father is a working class farmer. In stanza quartette of Digging it saysThe coarse boot nestled on the lug, theshaft against the inside knee was levered firmly. He grow out tall tops, bury the bright edge deepI believe that the first two lines convey to us that the spade is just as comfortable for his father as then pen is for him. On the next line the words rooted, out and tops are examples of assonance whereas buried and bright are both alliteration these two literacy devises together have an astonishing appeal adding poetical structure to the piece. In the sixth stanza Heaney s aysOnce I carried him milk in a bottle secure sloppily with paper. He straightened upTo drink it, then fell to right awayHe is talk of the town about his grandfather the way he says he fell to gives us the image of a golem like character programmed into doing his work only. It seems that he has no time for his grandson and although he is working hard and is concentrate this also is a manifestation of their poor relationship and highlights the lack of intimacy between the two. The fact that Heaney carried his grandfather milk shows that the children were get alongd to partake in family work and start their farming at a young age.Heaney praises and celebrates his fathers farming skills throughout his work and the relaxed movements and smooth rhythm that is described within Heaneys poetry becomes a great reflection upon the poetic technique of him as a writer showing that though his father has rhythmic physicality he himself apprise create a great poetic flowNicking and piece sv eltely, panting sodsOver his shoulder, going down and downFor the good turf. Digging. by means of these lines we see Heaney recreating the movement and allowing us to absorb the precise handling and controlled rhythm farming requires. Also the way the poet uses the title of the poem in a short sentence is very effective because it reinforces and reminds us of the key ideas Heaney wishes to highlight within this cross poem. The final two stanzas I believe are crucial to the success of the poem as a whole. Heaney firstly saysThe cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slapOf soggy peatThis again is a reflection of the auditory diorama of the poem. We see here how the smells of Irish farming are also embedded in Heaneys memory the onomatopoeia and alliteration used here makes his senses visual for the reader to interpret. Heaney goes on to stateThrough living roots awaken in my head. But Ive no spade to follow men like themMy interpretation of this phrase would suggest the harsh r eality that he himself is attached from the roots of his family tree. We see that though he admires his family greatly he hasnt got the drive, the skill or the ambition to continue and quote their fine work. The fact Heaney doesnt have the skill of a farmer is reflected when he states But I have no spade this translates to tell the reader that he isnt at all like his family members and shows us that he is distancing himself from them. The poem finally ends with a stanza much like the firstBetween my finger and my thumbThe squat pen rests.Ill dig with itIt is clearly noticeable that the poet has not used any reference to a gun here and we see he has re luffd the gun with a tool so he may dig. I believe that when he says he will dig with his pen he is talking about digging into his family history and glorifying his ancestors by continuing their tradition in his own way. I believe that the fact the last line in set in the future tense emphasizes Heaneys determination. I also think the ending of this poem concludes some sort of temporary resolution yet we know the poet is not finished there is more that Heaney feels must be said in order to settle his troubled mind and erase the stereotype. This brings us onto followerFollower being the title of this poem is in itself slightly ironic as he is writing of how he used to be a follower to his father as a child, traipsing around the farm yet there is the reality that now he knows he cannot follow his father in the family tradition. Throughout this poem the skill and precision of Heaneys father is stressed. He starts stanza two by calling his father An expert. This is an extremely short sentence with no verbs which conveys the feeling that there is no dispute about Heaneys appraisal of his father I believe it is an accurate opinion of the mans ability and precision. The phrase Single pluck proves his father can turn a horse and plough around effortlessly this conveys the flawlessness he has achieved over time. In the ne xt stanza Narrowed and angled is used to again describe the precise technique his father uses. The second half of the poem which consists of three stanzas, talks about Heaney as a child and how he acted rather than about his father and the skills he had. The starts of these three stanzas I believe are very significantI stumbled is the first, followed by I wanted and finally I was a nuisance. I think that these truly prove to the reader Heaneys acceptance of his failure as a child and his failure as a farmer.Within the fourth stanza of Follower Heaney mentions the polished sod this again describes how neat his father was by allowing us to create a picture of how exact and perfect the farmland was the term sod means a surface covered with gage or turf it also can be a section cut or torn from the surface of grassland, containing the matted roots of grass we imagine this to be tatty and not at all as Heaney describes it this reflects upon how his father was such a credible craftsman, it seems like he could perfect any land. The father son relationship is also reflected within FollowerSometimes he rode me on his back,Dipping and rising to his plod.We know that Heaneys father is a man of authorization and power but here we see that he is also a man with know for his dear son. Their loving relationship is prominent through the way he treats his son. These two lines show readers that they both enjoyed being together on the farm and also that Heaneys father showed sheer enjoyment when introducing his eldest son to a life of farming and to the traditional trade itself. Although Heaney was a nuisance his father would encourage him and help him along. We see how Heaney is filled with idolisation towards his heroic father, he saysI wanted to grow and plough,To boney one eye, stiffen my arm. This symbolizes his admiration and shows us that Heaney as a child saw farming as a way of emulating his fathers actions. I as a reader can envision what an immense opportunity far ming could have been for Heaney it was a chance for him to live up to his fathers achievements and continue to sue greatness in the trade himself therefore glorifying the family name.Through studying this poem I can see how the poetry itself is much more flexible than that within Digging. I can see how he has eased up and feels he can be more personal with the way he writes he is talking about himself and his father directly throughout showing to me as a reader that he is calmer and no longer has so many serious and forceful points he must portray to us his mind seems more settled. He shows acceptance of his fathers work and growing composure which is just slightly burst as he shows again his frustration and regret at the end of the poem.As shown, Heaney uses many poetic techniques within his work , often he uses imagery this literacy devise is a great tool that brings his work to life creating a sense of immediacy that produces vivid pictures in our minds making me as a reader fe el involved and captured within the moment. Within Digging images of a man-machine are used to glorify and come forward the pictures we see when imagining Heaneys ancestors whereas Follower uses nautical imagery, this is imagery that is linked to ships and boats. We are given the image of a man-machine in Digging through the powerful, masculine verbs Heaney uses he says rhythmic words such as straining and stooping they are monotonous, repetitive and reveal the strenuous nature of pastoral work illustrating the power his father and fathers father wielded with their shovel and sweat.Twenty years awayThis is a phrase that reinforces the repetitive nature of the physical labour it lets us know that farming is a job for life. Heaney visualises his father in his prime to place emphasize upon the power he had. The technical terms used like lug, shaft and levered keep up the machine image. With machine-like accuracyHe rooted out the tall tops, buried the bright edged deepThe alliteration u sed here enhances the readers visual imagery producing a picture of experience and excellence. We see further on how the image of a man-machine is reinforced as Heaney speaks of his grandfather, he saysNicking and slicing neatly, heaving sodsOver his shoulder, going down and downFor the good turf. This shows us that the generations of skill have been passed down through the family as has the ancient tradition we see how Heaneys grandfather truly knew his craft. Great strength and power is exposed when reading these lines.Follower immediately illuminates the agricultural aspect of Ireland we see this is the first line where he says his father worked with a horse-plough to reinforce the Irish cultivation Heaney uses technical terms such as wing, sock and headrig this shows his involvement in the farming tradition and his up bringing is reflected as we see he has come to learn the language of a true farmer. We came to realise that instead of the man machine images that are used in Digging Heaney uses nautical references to create imagery within Follower the nautical aspect is used to interpret the flow of his fathers work which works immensely well. The first of the nautical implications is when Heaney speaks of his father bywordHis shoulders globed like a full sail strungThis simile is used to show the immense strength and great power within his fathers masculine physique it epically suggests that there are decisive requirements and necessities needed to be as good a farmer as Heaneys father indeed is. I also believe that the word Globed is especially used as it has a hidden meaning I believe it suggests that Heaney thinks the world of his father and that it is a reflection of his fathers Godly ambience. The tertiary line of the second stanza states thatThe sod rolled over without breakingThis nautical reference translates to the fact that as the earth turned it looked like a wave breaking in the sea.Mapping the furrow scarceThis is a navigational image, the us e of the word exactly reveals that his father does the work precisely and perfectly evince upon his experience and skill showing he has been working the land for a long time.Heaney also saysI stumbled in his hob-nailed wakeAgain this is said nautically when referring to his father this reference is meaning that heWas like a ships trail his father indeed being the ship itself. This reference could also symbolise an image of the plowmans heavy boots, the carefully ploughed furrow and the childs clumsy enthusiasm.
