The book What They Fought For, by James M. McPherson came in three sections. The   commencement ceremony chapter talked about the  allied side and questions what they fought for. The book also takes a  play into the Union side, while the third chapter takes a  compute at the  thr alldom issue by both sides.   In the first chapter, it talks about what the Confederate soldiers were thinking when   penning in their letter and journals. These men were filled with the willingness to die for  impropriety and self-government. A soldier said that the war was a   splashing between Liberty on one side, and Tyranny on the other. For many of these soldiers, their mind of thinking was that they were defending their home against an  invading enemy; even though the enemy also lived on American soil. However everything is not what it seems  bid it is for the Yankees. For these people, they were upholding the legacy of the American Revolution.

 In these peoples letters, they would  pen about how they  are the youngest and the brightest of the nation and should not bow to traitors and  forswear the graves of the  origination fathers. Unlike the Confederates, some of these Yankees had feelings of hate that reviled the Confederate soldiers. Their belief in what they called the glorious Cause was what kept them  personnel casua   lty even though they were farther away from !   home than the Confederates.   In the third  break of the book, it talks about what the peoples views of slaveholding were.  virtually Confederate soldiers believed that they were fighting for liberty and slavery, and that they were one.  numerous of these people considered slavery as a form of servitude,  oft preferring to call slaves and slavery as servants and southern institutions.
